USA downs Canada 3-1 for Third Place Women's World Cup Updates: 10/11

W-League alumni accounted for three of the four goals on the day as the US claimed Third Place for the tournament with a 3-1 victory over the surprising Canadians, who advanced to the World Cup semifinals for the first time.

Former Delaware Genie Kristine Lilly scored the opening goal for the United States in the 22nd minute when she blasted a loose ball at the top of the box into the back of the net for the early lead. Vancouver Whitecaps forward Christine Sinclair would level the score at 1-1 in the 38th minute when Christine Latham sent her through as she streaked toward the box, beating the US defense and slotting the ball past goalkeeper Briana Scurry, another former Genie. Former Boston Renegade Shannon Boxx, who was named the Player of the Game, scored the historic game-winner with a header on a Mia Hamm corner kick in the 51st minute. In addition to being the game-winner, the tally was the 1,000th goal in US Women's National Team history. Tiffeny Milbrett would put the game out of reach in the 80th minute.
