Women's World Cup Updates: 9/27 Canada downs Japan 3-1, advances to Quarterfinals

Canada rallied to down Japan for their second-ever World Cup victory, advancing them to the Quarterfinals for the first time. Three W-Leaguers played a roll offensively in the match as Homare Sawa gave Japan the early lead and Christine Sinclair and Kara Lang scored for Canada. Also advancing to the quarters were Germany from Canada's Group C and Brazil and Norway in Group B.

Former Denver Diamonds player Homare Sawa scored her third goal of the tournament in the 20th minute to give Japan the early lead only to see the Canadians rally to move onto the Quarterfinals. Christine Latham equalized in the 36th for a 1-1 halftime score. Former Vancouver Whitecaps forward Christine Sinclair, who assisted on the Latham equalizer, provided the game-winner four minutes into the second half on a Brittany Timko (Vancouver Whitecaps) corner kick. Whitecaps forward Kara Lang chipped the Japanese goalkeeper Nozomi Yamogo in the 72nd minute for the insurance tally. Ottawa Fury goalkeeper Taryn Swiatek made several key saves for Canada in her second start for injured goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc.
