Thursday, September 25, 2003
Former W-League players Abby Wambach and Julie Foudy scored as the US rolled over Nigeria, 5-0, and former Memphis Mercury player Cheryl Salisbury led the Australian defense to a surprising 1-1 draw against China to keep their hopes of advancing to the Quarterfinals alive.
USA 5 :: 0 Nigeria
The United States virtually locked up a spot in the Quarterfinals with their second win, downing Nigeria in commanding fashion. Mia Hamm scored two first half goals and Cindy Parlow gave the US a 3-0 lead two minutes into the second half. Former W-League players Julie Foudy, who played for the Sacramento Storm in the league's formative years, and Abby Wambach, who played for the Rochester Ravens in 1998, scored in the final third of the game to cap the game. Wambach's goal in the 65th minute was her first-ever Women's World Cup goal. Former Delaware Genies player Kristine Lilly assisted on the goal. Hamm moved into the all-time lead in Women's World Cup scoring at 28 points. FIFA Game Summary: http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/03/en/t/match/14/index.html
China 1 :: 1 Australia
Former Memphis Mercury player Cheryl Salisbury had an outstanding performance holding off the Chinese attack that had the Australian defense under siege for most of the second half, which opened with the China taking advantage of a defensive lapse in the first minute of the period for the equalizer. Former Toronto Inferno midfielder Danielle Small set up Australia's go-ahead goal in the 28th minute by Heather Garriock. FIFA Game Summary: http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/03/en/t/match/16/index.html
Sweden 1 :: 0 South Korea
Ghana 0 :: 3 Russia
Three goals from three different players would give Russia their second win of the tournament and secure them a spot in the Quarterfinals with China's draw later in the evening against Australia. They face China Sunday. FIFA Game Summary: http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/03/en/t/match/15/index.html
