WOODBRIDGE, VA -- The Northern Virginia Majestics eagerly announced the additions of Katie Watson and Tara Kidwell to the 2008 roster. The local duo is expected to pose a daunting threat this summer, enhancing an already solid Northern Virginia front line. Waston was a member of the Washington Freedom’s USL Super-20 team who won the inaugural league championship in 2006.
Watson (Woodbridge, VA), a local product from Potomac High School, is a standout for the Old Dominion University Lady Monarchs. After transferring from Marshall University, Watson fronted a potent ODU attack and led the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in scoring with 13 goals and 7 assists. She finished her junior year by being named to both the First Team All-CAA and Second Team All-Region by NSCAA/Adidas.
Kidwell (Leesburg, VA) brings to the Majestics experience at both forward and the midfield. A 2004 graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Kidwell finished second on the UAB Blazer’s all-time goal-scoring list with 24 career goals. Her collegiate accolades include First Team Southeast Region (NSCAA) and Second Team All-Region (Soccer Buzz) honors.
Kidwell and Watson both join the Majestics after playing the 2007 season for the Washington Freedom. Kidwell played in 14 games with a goal and three assists in the regular season, adding four more appearances as she helped guide the team to the league championship. Watson tallied a goal and assist in 12 regular season fixtures, but doubled her season scoring totals in the playoffs with a goal and assist in the first of two playoff appearances.
The Northern Virginia Majestics face a challenging schedule of opponents in the Northeast Division in the upcoming season, including previous W-League Champions Washington Freedom and New Jersey Wildcats. The Majestics open the season on the road against historical powerhouse Boston Renegades on May 17th. The Majestics will kick off their home season Saturday, June 7th against the expansion Connecticut Passion.
