CONNECTICUT - Rebecca Moros (Duke) waited until the last game of the season to score a goal. But her lone tally of the season gave her Washington Freedom a 1-nil victory over CFC Passion in the USL W-League regular season finale for both teams.

Moros was given a penalty kick from 12 yards out when the Passion’s Megan Ashforth (Yale) was assessed a yellow card. Moros made good on the opportunity on a kick to the upper right corner of the net past CFC goal keeper Kelly Boudreau (Farmington High School).

The defending W League champions, Washington closed the campaign 11-1-2 and will have a bye in the first round of the upcoming playoff. The Passion closed their first-ever W League season at 7-5-2.

Washington was forced to play one player short for the final 9 minutes of the game when Kate Golebiowski was given a red card. Despite the advantage, the Passion were not able to tie the game with an open shot in the 89th minute by leading scorer Furtuna Valej (Westhill High School) went just wide to the left of the goal.

Despite the loss in the final game, CFC coach Dave Clarke called the season “an unqualified success.”

“There were lots of positives, especially in the area of individual growth by our players,” Clarke said. “We had a very respectable record, were in the playoff hunt almost until the final match, and created a solid foundation to take forward until next year.”
