Saturday, May 18, 2013

BOYDS, Md. – Undaunted by their inability to find the net in the first half, the Washington Spirit Reserves resilience paid off with two second-half goals to top the Virginia Beach Piranhas Saturday night at the Maryland SoccerPlex. The final 45 minutes became the ‘tale of two Ashleys’ as goals by both Ashley Herndon and Ashley Spivey proved enough to best the pesky Piranhas.

With the looming threat of heavy rains throughout the Washington DC metro area for much of the day, the Spirit Reserves expected sloppy conditions for Saturday night’s match. However the weather seemed to spare the Maryland SoccerPlex, as field conditions remained ideally cool and dry throughout the evening.

As they did the previous Saturday, the Spirit Reserves surged forward offensively for much of the first half, launching numerous attacks at the Piranhas back line. Despite surrendering 12 Washington shots, the Virginia Beach defense held firm with the addition of several quality saves from Piranhas keeper Lauren Vetock.

With the match still scoreless, the second half began with some early pressure from the visiting Piranhas and Washington goalkeeper Didi Haracic was called upon twice to keep Virginia Beach off the scoreboard. The Spirit Reserves then regrouped and found their legs to resume pressure on the Piranhas net.

Washington forward Herndon broke the deadlock in the 48th minute after collecting an errant pass near midfield. Herndon drove forward down the left side and tucked her shot low and true, scoring her second goal in as many weeks on the season.

University of Maryland product Spivey entered the match midway through the second half and wasted little time on making her presence known. After beating her defender on the far side, Spirit forward Amber Stobbs slotted a nifty pass across the Virginia Beach box to the crashing Spivey. The Washington forward drilled her shot untouched into the Piranhas net in the 73rd minute for the 2-0 victory.

“We showed great character and energy in keeping a very hard working Piranhas team quiet last night,” said head coach Mark Parsons. “It was very pleasing to see we are improving on the ball and creating chances.

“A full team performance from all the players was key in our first important win of the season.”

The Spirit Reserves make the short trip south next week to face the Fredericksburg Impact on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27th. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at the Fredericksburg Field House stadium. Washington returns home the following weekend to host the North Jersey Valkyries on Saturday, June 1st at 4 p.m. That match will be held as a special event at Liberty High School in Bealeton, Virginia.

Jaime Bell and Leandra Walker scored as the Strikers opened the season with a victory.

The Strikers came out strong, earning their first good opportunity in the ninth minute when forward Ann Tangorra fired a shot from inside the penalty box. Blues goalkeeper Anna Picarelli was unsettled and rose to the challenge to keep the Strikers off the board. Three minutes later, Vitoria Boardman took with a hard shot on target from outside the box. Picarelli made the initial block, and then grabbed the rebound before the Strikers could capitalize.

The Strikers finally got on the board in the 25th minute when Kristy Krohn fed a ball through to Bell, who faced Picarelli and beat her with a shot to the far post.

The Blues had their first real chance in the 31st minute off a corner kick. Defender Sasha Andrews found the ball at the back post and just missed the header by a few inches. The Blues had one more opportunity to equalize, but Megan Borman could not get a good shot off as Ryan Torrero was coming in to close her angle. The ball rolled out of bounds.

Pali opened the second half with another opportunity off a corner kick. Andrews hit a downward header that almost bounced in, but Torrero got a hand on it to keep it out. The defense then cleared it away at the line.

Neither team created major chances until the 83rd minute when Picarelli made two huge saves to prevent the Strikers from extending their lead. The game started getting physical thereafter, as the Blues fought for the equalizer.

The Strikers then scored again in the 89th minute. Walker unleashed what looked like an attempt to cross the ball, but instead it sailed toward the top left corner of the goal and bounced in off the inside of the post, producing the final margin.

The Blues will next travel to the Bay Area to take on the Breeze on May 31. They will return home to host the Colorado Rapids on Thursday, June 6 at Occidental College.

Seattle Sounders Women News Release - www.sounderswomen.com

Friday, May 17, 2013

TUKWILA, Wa. - In the final tune-up of the preseason, the Sounders Women and the Vancouver Whitecaps played to a 0-0 draw. Despite two point blank chances in the final four minutes, the Sounders were unable to capitalize on a dominant performance.

The Sounders Women and Vancouver Whitecaps match was the 41st in the storied history between the two clubs.

The youth on the pitch for Vancouver and the inexperience between new teammates for Seattle led to a back and forth first half. The Sounders Women dominated the midfield and were able to keep possession for most of the first half, but struggled with the timing in their attack. Seattle had no problem getting up and down the field, but could not connect in the final third.

In the 34th minute Brigit Reder found some space high in the penalty area, but her powerful shot sailed wide of the far post.

Vancouver finally got their first shot off in the 36th minute when midfielder Jasmin Dhanda hit a spinning ball hard on goal. Goalkeeper Erin McNulty did well on her first save of the evening to deny the effort.

Whitecaps defender, Nicole Steward, faced plenty of pressure throughout the night, but was able to defend repeated chances from the Sounders Women on the right side of the Vancouver defense. Her effort along with others helped preserve a first half shutout.

As the second half got under way, both sides were able to continue some of the momentum they found near the end of the first half, but the Sounders Women were still distinctly in control of the match.

In the 68th minute Whitecaps forward found their best chance of the match when Summer Clarke received a through ball into the box. Goalkeeper Megan Kufeld made a perfect play on the ball as she sprinted out to meet the run with her foot just before Clarke could put the ball on goal.

As play opened up, it seemed impossible that the game would end scoreless.

"I definitely felt that we should have scored in the end, it was just unfortunate that we didn’t get it," said Seattle’s Marta Mathews about the multiple chances the Sounders Women had to break the draw.

In the 87th minute Elston pulled the ball down in front at the edge of the box. She touched it away from defenders and to open up space, and fired a shot right at Whitecaps goalkeeper Natalie Boyd.

Vancouver retaliated with a chance of their own to steal the match when a shot by substitute Chelsea Harkins just missed finding the far post after it went by Kufeld.

"It really felt like we were going to get one when we were pushing hard near the end there," said Sounders veteran Tafara Pulse. "We typically do that, we pick it up as a team in the last 20 minutes, but it just didn’t fall our way."

The two best chances of the match came in extra time for the Sounders. A lobbed pass to the left edge of the box found Emily Hurd. The winger played a well weighted ball to the back post where Lindsay Elston was unmarked. The usually clinical finisher volleyed over and wide of the gaping net.

Then, just moments later, it appeared like the Sounders would still get their winner. In the 94th minute, the Sounders Women worked a ball to the front of the net where Emily Hurd put a shot off of the Vancouver goalkeeper. Hurd had a second chance to punch the ball home but sent her effort at the keeper for another save to earn the draw.

The Sounders Women kick off the 2013 W-League campaign in ten days when they welcome the LA Strikers to Starfire. The Sounders and Strikers play a 6 p.m. ET match on Memorial Day with points on the line. Tickets for this match and the rest of the season are currently on sale on SoundersWomen.com.

After reaching the 2012 championship game the Blues have their eyes set on winning the title this season.

Head coach Charlie Naimo and goalkeeper Anna Picarelli discussed the team heading into the season-opener.

“I am extremely concerned about the first game, as I am every year,” said Naimo. “There is an enormous amount of talent on the team, but we have not had the chance to prepare very well. This week we were without five of our players at [U-23 US Women’s] national team camp, and a few others still at school. We’ve also been nursing a few minor injuries.”

Naimo’s concern comes from going up against a confident and improved LA Strikers team.

“Games are always difficult against confident teams,” he said. “I think in their minds, they have formed a rivalry with us. The importance of the game is high for us, but it’s probably higher for them because they want to beat us. But we are going into the season not thinking about the rivalry. We are thinking about winning the championship.”

Picarelli is excited for the chance for redemption after losing the league title in a penalty kick shootout last year.

“I can’t wait for out game tomorrow,” she said. “I’ve been looking forward to this since the whistle blew in the last game in 2012. After getting together with this team on the field, I know this year’s team is a championship team. The talent this group has along with the hard work everyone puts in, this team is going to turn heads and that all starts tomorrow.”

Naimo concluded his thoughts on what it’s going to take for his squad to defeat the Strikers.

“This team is focused, so if we can hold up physically, we’ll have a good match,” he said. “They can’t look at our past record against the Strikers and get too confident, so I’m cautiously optimistic about the match.”

The battle between the Blues and the Strikers will begin at 10 p.m. ET at Palisades High School. Kara Blosser got on the end of a corner kick by Kimmy Cummings early in the contest before the hosts rallied for the win. Blosser, a central midfielder, was named to the W-League Team of the Week for her efforts.

The Impact started a young team in the match, with high school junior Halle Parker playing the entire game at sweeper against Virginia Beach’s high-octane offense. Fellow high school teammate Sydney Wallace, a sophomore, also saw action late in the match as Fredericksburg searched for a game-tying score.

Fredericksburg created many chances throughout the game, but were unable to put them away, which is something Coach Rich Stoneman said the team will need to improve on going forward.

“I think our conference in the W-League is probably the hardest, and our girls got a taste what they did, can and will be able to do moving forward,” he said. “I think they are hungry to be able to travel this weekend and put together a full 90 minutes [in both games].”

Saturday’s game will be the season opener for Long Island, which finished the 2012 season with a 9-4-0 record. The Rough Riders reached the Eastern Conference semifinals last year as the Northeast Division champion, but fell 4-0 to the Charlotte Eagles.

Long Island will be led by Grace Hawkins and Sue Weber. Hawkins was named W-League MVP in 2012 and has a knack for finding the net after leading the league in both points with 38 and goals scored with 17. Weber is a two-time W-League Defender of the Year winner, who returns to the team after taking off the 2012 season for maternity leave.

Coming off a tough 2012 campaign where they finished with a 3-7-2 record, the Magic (1-0-0) opened their season last Saturday with a 2-1 upset victory against the Washington Spirit Reserve at the Maryland SportsPlex.

In the contest, Brittany Pfaff set up Lorena Maggio for the game-tying goal, before scoring the game-winner in the 86th minute as New York tallied twice in the final 15 minutes for the victory. Pfaff was named the W-League Player of the Week for her performance, while teammates Maggio and defender Kelsey Hegg earned Team of the Week honors.

“We expect both teams to be solid,” Stoneman said. “The New York Magic upset the Washington Spirits, which won last year’s Atlantic Division. It’s going to be like a fight in these two matches, and after 90 minutes, we’ll see who’s left standing.”

After the opening loss, and heading into their first home game at Fredericksburg Field House on May 27, Fredericksburg’s players obviously would like to bring home a couple of wins, and hope another week of practice under their belt will be the difference.

“These practices we had this week have set us up going forward,” said midfielder Kimmy Cummings, who returned to the Impact this year after playing with the team in its inaugural season in 2011. “Last weekend we played, we were a little rusty but it wasn’t that bad at all. We’ve got some experience on our team, and we are looking for those girls to step up and make this weekend successful.”

Sounders Women News Release- sounderswomen.com

Friday, May 17, 2013

TUKWILA, Wash. – The end of preseason for the Sounders Women brings with it the return of five University of Washington players: Allie Beahan, Annie Sittauer, Lindsay Elston, Megan Kufeld and Isabel "Izzie" Farell. After facing off in last Friday’s college exhibition match, the group returns to Starfire this week to join the Sounders Women in their final preseason game against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The ability for the Huskies to transition from rivals to teammates in the span of a week, exemplifies the important relationship the Sounders Women have developed with collegiate players.

University of Washington Head Coach and Sounders Women Technical Director, Lesle Gallimore, said, “The W-League and specifically the Sounders Women, has played a key role in the development of many of my players at Washington over the years. It is key for top college players, with eligibility remaining, to have an environment to play in during the off-season.”

Of the handful of players returning to the Sounders Women this season, the group of Huskies make up the majority. While the 2012 squad included the likes of famed soccer stars, Alex Morgan and Hope Solo, their moving to the National Women’s Soccer League has given way to opportunities for a new generation of players.

"Last year we were playing alongside the best of the best. Although it was a dream, I was a little hesitant whenever I stepped on the field because I didn’t know what to expect," midfielder Elston, said. "This season, largely due to my experience last year, I have a lot more confidence in who I am as a player.”

The confidence and experience Elston gained with the Sounders Women last year, translated into a breakout season with the Huskies in 2012. Lindsay led UW in shots (77), points (27), assists (5) and goals (11).

Elston’s success in front of the goal can be attributed to the support from fellow midfielders Beahan and Farrell. Beahan was a solid player for both the Sounders and Huskies in 2012. She started in 20 out of the 21 games for UW, and recorded two goals for the Sounders Women. Farell also had an impressive rookie season at UW, starting in 19 games, and earning herself an invitation to the U-20 Youth National Team camp this past spring.

While the Huskies will be well represented up front, defender Sittauer and goal keeper Kufeld, will look to rejoin the Sounders defensive efforts. In 2012, Sittauer made her debut on the Sounders backline playing in 12 games, and showed her ability to get forward in the attack- leading the Sounders with three assists.

“Playing for the Sounders last season was one of my favorite experiences and I grew so much as a player," Sittauer said. "The team this year is looking very competitive and I’m excited to be challenged once again.”

Kufeld rejoins the Sounders after an impressive showing in last Friday’s match with the Huskies. After a second half dominated by the Sounders Women, Kufeld recorded a total of 13 saves to secure a 1-1 tie. Although the game could be described as a battle, all of the players agree that this type competition is essential to success.

“The energy, enthusiasm, competition, and talent at training and in the exhibition matches has been outstanding," Kufeld said. "I can just feel that the team is ready to go, and hopefully we will make our mark on the W-League this season.”

The UW players return in time to compete in the final preseason match against the Vancouver Whitecaps at 7:30 p.m. at Starfire Sports Stadium, before season play kicks off on May 27th. Magic forward Brittany Pfaff knocked home the game winner in the 86th minute to doom the Washington W-League side.

Numerous area thunderstorms forced stadium and field closures throughout early Saturday evening, pushing kickoff to 6 p.m. Despite the delay, things could not have started better for the home side Spirit Reserves in the opening minutes of the match. Washington grabbed the early lead in the sixth minute when forward Tiffany Brown turned with the ball in the Magic box and flicked it over to speedy teammate Ashley Herndon. Herndon blasted her shot from close range untouched into the upper part of the New York goal for the 1-0 lead.

The Spirit Reserves peppered New York for much of the first half, outshooting the Magic 10-3. However, Washington was unable to solve the Magic defense to find the net and the half finished with the single-goal lead.

The second half began much like the first, but as time wore on New York found itself creating more and more chances. The Magic had a golden opportunity in the 71st minute, however Washington goalkeeper DiDi Haracic snuffed out the point-blank shot to preserve the slim lead.

The Magic evened things in the 75th minute when forward Brittany Pfaff slotted the ball through the middle for New York substitute Lorena Maggio to finish. Eleven minutes later Pfaff took matters into her own hands to break free near midfield and race in on the Washington goal. Pfaff’s low shot found the back corner of the goal to earn the 2-1 victory for the Magic.

The Spirit Reserves remain home next week to face the Virginia Beach Piranhas on Saturday May 18. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Maryland Soccerplex.
