TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced Thursday its Premier Development League and W-League Teams of the Week for the 13th week of the season, honoring Ottawa’s Kevin Omokhua and Richmond’s Sandra Anger as the Players of the Week, respectively.
The Ottawa Fury kept themselves in the running for the wild card berth in the Eastern Conference while also dealing a surprising blow to the hopes of the Ocean City Barons with a pair of 2-1 wins on the road behind the four-goal performance of Kevin Omokhua.
The Fury opened with a victory in Delaware Saturday in which Omokhua opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Jerry Bekoe leveled the match for the Dynasty in the 53rd only to see Omokhua strike again for the winner eight minutes later.
The following night at Ocean City, the Fury followed a similar pattern in handing the Barons their first regular season loss at home since 2003. Omokhua found the back of the net 18 minutes into the match with Ruben Mingo scoring the equalizer in the 32nd. Omokhua converted a penalty in the 70th minute for what proved to be the game-winner.
With their backs against the wall following a 2-0 loss in Cocoa Thursday, the Richmond Kickers Destiny registered a pair of wins on the road over the weekend to clinch a playoff berth by the narrowest of margins behind the play of captain Sandra Anger.
Anger opened the scoring Friday night in Central Florida against the 2005 W-League semifinalists and fellow playoff contender in the 35th minute of action. Needing maximum points in their final two games, it appeared the visitors were on their way only to see Claire Kohake tie the match five minutes from time. With a draw and playoff elimination looming, Anger found Karen Frederick with seconds remaining in stoppage time for the victory.
Two nights later in Bradenton, who played them to a scoreless draw in Richmond earlier in the year, Anger put the Kickers Destiny on the board 11 minutes in. Becky Sauerbrunn and Karen Frederick would add goals in the 45th and 82nd to lead the squad to a 3-0 win and ensure them of a playoff berth.
