Boston grabs late 1-0 win Hucles strikes winner in 106th at Long Island

UNIONDALE, NY -- On a cold, wet, windswept evening in Long Island the Boston Renegades claimed their first win of the season thanks to US National Team player Angela Hucles grabbing the winning goal.
It had taken the Renegades 106 minutes to break down the resistance of the home team but it was veteran Sarah Rahko who created the opportunity for new signing, US international Angela Hucles to open her account for the Renegades.
The Lady Riders set out their stall very early on, snuffing out the visitors chances. The home team was well disciplined and was difficult for the 2001 & 2002 W-League Champion Boston Renegades to break down. Luis Reis’ charges were to find chances few and far between during the game and the Renegades were unable to find that final ball through to the front two of Hucles and Welcome, but were elated when Hucles notched the winner deep into the second period of overtime.
Reis commented, “The Lady Riders set out their stall very early on, they were disciplined and very difficult to break down.”
The home team seemed content for the tie against the Renegades, but Rahko and Hucles had other ideas. The Renegades gave debuts to US U19 National Team players Laura Comeau and Becky Sauerbrunn in Long Island this evening. New Hampshire native, Comeau recorded a clean sheet and her UVA teammate Sauerbrunn was solid in defense for her new team.
Reis changed things around after the New Jersey defeat and brought in Sauerbrunn alongside Liza Barber and moved Jenny Anderson to left full back. U21 French international Zoe Avner and Big Green defensive midfielder Kelli Partridge were given their first starts of the season and were not to disappoint.
Nevertheless, it was the old guard and the most decorated Renegades player that came to the rescue. Renegades veteran, Sarah Rahko provided the ball for Hucles to register the first win for the Renegades. The Renegades left it late with the 106th minute goal, but were happy to secure their first win of the season before the long trip back home to Boston.
The Renegades will resume their home schedule on Saturday May 28, 2005 @ 7pm, when local pride is at stake as they take on the Western Mass Lady Pioneers. The game is a part of the Holliston Youth Soccer Memorial Day Tournament and the Renegades will look to add to their victory tonight in Long Island.
