Krush sign trio of International players Fotopoulos, Mitts, Jones to play for Orlando
Winter Park, FL — The Central Florida Krush women’s soccer team has announced today the newest additions to their 2005 roster. Signing former US National Team member and founding WUSA player Danielle Fotopoulos, Olympian Heather Mitts (pictured), and Scottish International Rhonda Jones, the Krush continue to stack their roster with some of the biggest names in women’s soccer. “Obviously we are very excited about the addition of these players, both for our fans and our team," says Krush Vice President Joe Dalton.
Florida native Danielle Fotopoulos will give Central Florida a kick start as she brings experience and success to this already dynamic squad. Her ability to score almost at will catapulted her onto the US Women’s National Team in 1996, and again in 1999 as a member of the Women’s World Cup Championship Team. A former local high school star at Lyman High School in Longwood, FL, Danielle played her college soccer at the University of Florida. There, Fotopoulos became a two-time All-American, surpassing Mia Hamm’s goal-scoring record which she still holds with 118 Division I goals scored. The World Cup Champion is thrilled to be playing with the Krush in their inaugural season. “I’m happy to be continuing my soccer career in my hometown," says Fotopoulos. "It’s going to be a great year."
Defender Heather Mitts has also made a name for herself on the National Team, coming off a 2004 Olympic gold medal from Athens, Greece and more recently, an Algarve Cup championship in Portugal with the US Women’s Team. A teammate of Danielle’s at Florida, Heather is looking forward to playing alongside her again. “It’s going to be great to be back on the field with several former teammates. Although we are a first year franchise, we will be very good this season,” says Mitts.
Both Fotopoulos and Mitts played in the WUSA with Carolina and Philadelphia, respectively. Danielle doesn’t see any drop off in the level of play they will experience in the W-League. “There are a lot of former WUSA players in this league. Combine that with the number of National and International players along with many of the top college players in the country and you will see women’s soccer at it’s best,” says Fotopoulos.
The Krush has also signed Scottish International Rhonda Jones. Jones currently holds 38 International appearances for Scotland dating back to 1996.
The Krush will make their W-League debut on their home turf May 7th at 7:00pm versus the Carolina Dynamo in the new Krush Stadium at the Seminole Soccer Complex.
Home games are held at Krush Stadium at the Seminole Soccer Club complex in Lake Mary. For tickets and season pass information please call 407-682-KICK or visit www.krushsoccer.com.
