Myers new Kickers Destiny coach
RICHMOND, VA -- The Richmond Kickers Destiny (W-League) will take the field in 2005 under the guidance of new head coach, Jesse Myers. Currently, Myers serves as assistant coach for the Richmond Kickers professional team and will continue to hold those roles and responsibilities in addition to those of the women’s program.
Myers signed with the Richmond Kickers as assistant coach in January of 1997, helping the organization compile a 148-85-24 professional record in seven seasons. Prior to the Kickers, Myers has an extensive college coaching background. His coaching career started at Limestone College in South Carolina where he was a player from 1984-1986 and Assistant Coach in 1987. The next year, he went to Spartanburg Methodist College in South Carolina, where he had played soccer himself previously in 1983. As assistant coach for the SMC Women’s team, he led the team to the regional tournament for the first time.
In 1989, he moved to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte as Assistant Coach where he helped direct the team to a Metro Conference Championship and national rankings in 1991 and 1992. In 1993, he was named Head Coach at Division I Philadelphia Textile University where he amassed a record of 30-30-5.
Involved in youth soccer activities, Myers sees his work with young people as an important part of building character and growing the sport in this country. He has coached multiple youth teams of all levels and is currently the coach of the Richmond Kickers under-14 boys premier team. Jesse has developed a college guidance program for the club that serves to assist in the college recruiting process for the under-16 through under-18 age groups. He holds a USSF “B” License and an NSCAA Premier Diploma.
“I am excited for this new challenge, which the club has given me,” says Myers. “Ihor [Dotsenko] did a great job last season and has given me a strong foundation on which to build. We will start putting a team together immediately.”
The Richmond Kickers Destiny will enter their second season in 2005 after finishing the inaugural season with an overall record of 5-7-2, fourth in the Central Conference Atlantic Division. The W-League provides the most complete women’s player pool in the world. It is recognized as North America’s best women’s developmental organization. The W-League also gives the nation’s best college players the opportunity to play alongside established international players while maintaining their collegiate eligibility.
"I can't say enough about Jesse's willingness and desire to make our club continue to grow and be better,” says Richmond Kickers General Manager Paul Sterbenz. “With his knowledge, experience, and passion for the sport, he is an ideal fit for the continued development of our women's program, as well as our organization in general.”
The Richmond Kickers are currently seeking assistant coaches for the Richmond Kickers Destiny (W-League) and the Richmond Kickers Future (PDL). The PDL and W-League seasons run May 1st through August 1st. Please contact Paul Sterbenz, General Manager at (804) 644-5425 x 305 for more information.
