Sunday, June 13, 2004 - Montreal Xtreme News Release
MONTREAL, QUE -- In front of 1240 spectators reunited at Soccerplexe Catalogna in Lachine, the Montreal Xtreme lost the first game of its history Sunday, losing 4-1 against the Boston Renegades.
Only the Xtreme captain Amy Walsh (49th) beat Renegades goalkeeper Ashley Phillips on a penalty kick placed on the bottom left corner.
Katlin Munoz (20th and 45th), Megan Welcome (63rd) and Becky Westbury (81st) scored for Boston.
“We conceded four goals at home and its hard to accept, declared Alex Da Rocha, Xtreme Head-coach. It’s the first quality team we’ve played this year and we didn’t win every battles we should. We’ll have to step up for next game.”
Six players from the U19 national team CONCACAF champions were available to play but fatigue set in for some of these players.
“I really did not play my best game, mentioned Véronique Maranda, who was captain on the national team. We didn’t play to the potential and the rhythm we should against a team like Boston.”
Stacey Van Boxmeer, named CONCACAF best goalkeeper of the tournament, was in nets for the Xtreme.
The Montreal team also showed a few signs of impatience committing 24 fouls.
The Xtreme will play its next home game against the New York Magic, on Sunday, June 20th, on a double-header with the Montreal Impact, at Claude-Robillard Sports Complex. Meanwhile, Alex Da Rocha’s team will be heading to Western Mass to play the Lady Pionners, Friday, June 18th at 7:30 PM.
