PACIFIC PALISADES, Ca. - The Pali Blues (8-2-2) moved on to the W-League playoffs after defeating the Santa Clarita Blue Heat (4-7-1) 2-0 on Sunday evening at Palisades High School. With the victory, the Blues finished the season on top of the Western Conference table, and earned the right to host the second-place LA Strikers (8-4-0) in the Western Conference Championship. The winner will travel to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida July 26-28 to compete at the 2013 W-League Championship presented by Nike.
The Blues got on the board in the fifth minute of the match after goalkeeper Anna Picarelli initiated play out of the back. Pali worked the ball up the field to Elizabeth Eddy who squared to Ashley Freyer in the penalty box. Her low, hard strike into the corner put the Blues up 1-0 early.
The game settled and the Blue Heat forced the game into the midfield. Chioma Ubogagu and Mele French had chances just before the halftime whistle but neither could double the Blues' advantage.
In the second half, Sarah Killion almost got the second goal for Pali with a one-on-one opportunity against goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo. Killion attempted to shoot around Jacobo, but the goalkeeper saved the shot with her foot. Eddy then found Ubogagu with the rebound, but Jacobo once again denied the Blues.
Keeping the pressure high the Blues finally got their second to open up breathing room. Eddy played a through ball to Freyer who got around Jacobo and drilled a shot into the empty net.
The Blues finished the season in first place in the Western Conference and will host the Western Conference Championship match against the LA Strikers who finished the season in second place. The match is set to be played at Cal State Fullerton’s Titan Stadium on Sunday, July 21, at 12:30 p.m. PT.
