PLAINVIEW, N.Y. - The Long Island Rough Riders will host the North Jersey Valkyries on Saturday looking to move to the top of the table in the W-League's Northeastern Conference and extend their three-game home winning streak. Tied for second in the conference alongside the Washington Spirit Reserves with nine points, the Rough Riders have a chance to jump to the top of the table with a victory against the Valkyries.
The Rough Riders enter the match after an impressive 4-0 win against the New Jersey Wildcats. Forward Grace Hawkins gained confidence while tallying two goals and an assist to carry the team to victory. Luana Miessa and Reanna Marino also found the back of the net, scoring their first goals of the season.
The Valkyries have been inconsistent thus far this season. After their impressive 3-0 win against the New York Magic, they lost 3-1 against the Virginia Beach Piranhas this past weekend. North Jersey has conceded 14 goals, the most in the conference, and is currently in sixth place with three points.
The Rough Riders and Valkyries met three times in the 2012. On June 9 at Cy Donnelly Stadium, the Rough Riders lost 1-0 after a defensive breakdown in the final minute of the game. Valkyries midfielder Krissy Greenwood scored the game-winner. The Rough Riders traveled to DePaul Catholic High School on June 20, and after only playing 55 minutes due to severe thunderstorms, Long Island was able to secure a 1-0 victory. Forward Brooke DeRosa scored in the 15th minute off an assist by Kelly Eagon.
On July 14 the Rough Riders hosted the Valkyries for a second time, looking to come back after the previous heartbreaking loss at home. Long Island broke through quickly in the 7th minute when Molly Bruh delivered a free kick into Hawkins, who finished it into the back of the net. Hawkins’ goal proved to be the game-winner and clinched the division title.
