Experienced pro to serve as player/assistant coach

Monday, November 26, 2012

DENVER - The Colorado Rapids Women today announced that former W-League standout Rebekah Patrick has joined the Rapids Women for the 2013 season as a player and assistant coach. During the 2012 season Patrick was a staff coach with the Rapids Women and played a crucial part in the success of both the W-League and Super-20 League teams.

Patrick’s playing experience includes a Division 1 NCAA National Championship with Portland, earning NSCAA All-Region honors and First Team All-American status in her time with the Pilots. Patrick has played in the W-League since 2005, earning all-conference selections in all seasons. In 2009, Patrick captured a W-League title with the Pali Blues, then moved on to play four seasons in the Superliga in Spain with Euromat L’estartit (2007-09), Prainsa Zaragoza (2009-10) and Sant Gabriel (2011-12).

Colorado Rapids Women Head Coach Daniel Clitnovici is excited in bringing Patrick on board for the 2013 season and the future.

"The decision to bring Rebekah on board was a no brainer for me," Clitnovici said. "Rebekah brings not only experience and quality as a player but also a wealth of professionalism and knowledge that she will use as a coach as well; she has been around soccer at the highest levels in the U.S. and in Europe and she will be a special person for the entire Rapids organization to have around."

The Colorado Rapids Women enjoyed success in their inaugural season in the W-League in 2012, placing fourth in the Western Conference. The Super-20 League side, which is assembled by Clitnovici to promote future stars to the W-League and beyond, was crowned champion after a 1-0 victory against D.C. United in July.

Patrick seems to share an interest in the style of soccer the Rapids played in 2012.

"I have always believed that the game is not over until the final whistle blows," she said. "So many games can be decided by final minutes or even seconds of the game. Coach Clitnovici’s Intense playing style shows a competitive nature I share and elevates the players to a much higher level of competition and awareness.

"The Rapids Women showed a lot of potential as well as commitment in their inaugural season. Every week and every game the team improved and made the proper adjustments, maturing as a collective. Hard work and continual improvement are things you strive for as a club, coach, or player, especially in an inaugural season like last season. I expect nothing but good things this upcoming season and I hope to be able to personally contribute a lot more both on and off the field."

The Colorado Rapids Women have announced tryout dates for the 2013 season and players interested in playing with the Rapids Women can contact Coach Patrick at rebekah@rapidswomen.com for tryout information.
