QUEBEC CITY - In a hard-fought game featuring rival teams from Quebec, it was ultimately the Amiral who won the Quebec Derby by beating the Laval Comets in penalty kicks to earn a spot at the 2012 W-League Championship presented by Umbro.
Laval opened the scoring in the 10th minute from a corner kick. Lazily defending their goal, the Amiral let the Comets win a second ball in the penalty area to score their first goal by Eva Thouvenot-Hébert. The Amiral responded in the 30th minute to tie the game when Frederique Paradis scored on a well-executed corner kick by Audrey Lagarde.
The Amiral started controlling the game and attacking Laval’s goal in the second half, but the Comets stayed strong and held on. The two overtime periods couldn’t crown a winner and both teams had to go through stressful penalty kicks to decide who would join the host Ottawa Fury in the final four. The Amiral earned the win by a score of 5-4, and after the fifth and final successful shot by Mélissande Guy, there was euphoria for the Amiral.
With the victory, the Amiral reached the W-League final four for the first time in the club’s short history.
"It is a great day for women’s soccer and for the entire region of Quebec," Head Coach Samir Ghrib said. "I am so proud of the girls. Despite their youth, they grew a lot this season."
The Amiral will face the Pali Blues in the semifinals on Friday, July 27 at 4:30 p.m. in Ottawa.
"It will be a different story for the Final Four, we will definetly need work harder than ever if we want to perform with the top teams that will be there" experienced captain Marie-Pier Bilodeau warned."
"There’s no doubt that we are going to Ottawa to continue this great adventure. This is the first participation of our team in the Final Four, but the girls are determined to go all the way," Ghrib added.
