SOUTH HUNTINGTON, NY - In a must-win game for both teams, the Rough Riders defeated the North Jersey Valkyries 1-0 on Saturday evening to clinch the Northeast Division title for the second consecutive year. The Rough Riders will now head to the Eastern Conference Championship hosted by D.C. United Women next weekend.
After working hard all season, it came down to one game. The Rough Riders took control early on and pressed forward looking for the breakthrough. In the 7th minute, Molly Bruh took a free kick from the right side and placed it far post. Kaila Sciascia headed it back across the goal mouth and Grace Hawkins put it in the net. The goal not only gave the Rough Riders the victory, but solidified Grace Hawkins as the leading scorer in the W-League.
Down 1-0, the Valkyries tried their best to even out the score. However, Rough Riders goalkeeper Lauren Ferris remained solid in the net, recording 10 saves in the shutout.
The Rough Riders are now headed to the playoffs in Washington D.C, where they take on Charlotte Lady Eagles on July 21st in the Eastern Conference semifinal.
"This team worked extremely hard to earn a division title and get back in the playoffs," said Long Island Rough Riders Vice President Flavio Ferri, "Our goal now is to compete for the conference title."
