COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Central SC Cobras lost 5-1 to the Charlotte Lady Eagles at home on Saturday night.
The Eagles (3-0-0) opened the scoring first when midfielder Leah Fortune hit one from the edge of the box, just past Cobra goalkeeper Sarah Schippers in the sixth minute.
The Cobras (0-2-2) battled back hard with two shots on goal early in the half but Eagle goalkeeper Robyn Jones saved both. While the Cobras outshot the Eagles 7-5 in the first half it was the Eagles who were able to put two more goals on the board before halftime with one in the 28th minute by midfielder Samantha Huecker and one in the 31st by forward Amanda Naeher.
Opening up the second half the Cobras pressured strong with shots from midfielder Tabitha Padgett, but it was the Eagles who scored in the 55th minute with a goal off a corner kick from defender Hannah Gmerek. And after a foul in the box in the 61st minute by Cobras substitute Ali Lizotte, the Eagles’ Naeher got her second goal of the evening scoring the penalty kick.
Down by five goals, the Cobras still fought back and were able to score their first goal of the evening in the 90th minute with Padgett scoring off a pass from forward Tashana Vincent.
The Cobras will be back in action visiting the Atlanta Silverbacks on Saturday, June 2 at 7 p.m. and will return home on Monday, June 4 against the FC Jax Destroyers at 3 p.m.
