July 20, 2010
SOUTH HUNGTINGTON, N.Y. – The Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues have been crowned the W-League Regular Season Champions for the second-straight year after defeating the Long Island Rough Riders 1-0 Sunday at Cy Donnelly Stadium.
Jackie Acevedo scored in the 16th minute when she finished a pass from Julianne Hubbard to give the Lady Blues a 1-0 lead and that would prove to be the only goal of the match.
Hubbard, along with midfielder Melissa Hayes, had to leave the match in the first half due to stomach illnesses, but the Lady Blues found a way to prevail and top Long Island to obtain the W-League Regular Season Championship.
“Everybody pulled through,” Head Coach Jesse Kolmel said. “It was incredible.”
By winning the regular season, the Lady Blues (11-1-0, 33 pts.) obtain a berth directly to the W-League semifinals in Santa Clarita, Calif. July 29. There, the Hudson Valley will join the winners of the three conference tournaments that take place this weekend.
