OTTAWA, ONTARIO – With the NCAA and CIS postseasons in full swing, Fury youth graduates and former Fury W-League players are making headlines across the league.
The Dominican College Chargers ended the 2009 regular season with a 9-6-4 overall record, good for fourth overall in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). Although the team would eventually lose, 4-0 to second-seeded Georgian Court University in the playoff semifinals, Jade Fletcher cemented her spot in the Chargers' defense with a superb year that saw her start and play in every minute of every game. As well as her defensive contributions, Fletcher added a goal in the 2009 season to her resume.
Fletcher played with Ottawa’s U16 girls last season. That team went 8-2-2 during the Super Y-League regular season and 2-0-1 during group play of the 2008 North American Finals before falling, 1-0 to the Chicago Magic in the semifinals.
A week after seeing former Fury Super Y-League and W-League player Anjelica Hodgson receive America-East Conference First-Team honors, the Nepean-born defender was also named to the America-East All-Academic Team.
Those awarded a spot on the team have exhibited not only exceptional qualities on the field during collegiate games, but also off the field in the classroom. Student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.30 or over to qualify to be considered for the team. Hodgson was one of only three repeat-selections from the 2008 season. Hodgson played in six matches for the Fury during the 2006 and 2007 seasons totaling 171 minutes of action.| Full Article [+]
At Loyola College, after ensuring she was one of the most notable rookies in the entire conference with her performances during the regular season, Tessa McClenahan once again came up with a huge goal for the Greyhounds in playoff competition.
The Ottawa native and former Fury Super Y-League team MVP booked her team's spot in the NCAA College Cup after scoring the winner over Niagara in a 3-2 Metro Atlantic Conference Championship win. The Greyhounds, 12-0-2, were the first team in the country to advance to the College Cup through a conference tournament this season. They face West Virginia in the first round of the NCAA tournament. | Full Article [+]
McClenahan competed in the upcoming Super Y-League North American Finals last season as part of the Fury’s U17 girls run to the championship match. The team went 8-1-3 in their New England region to qualify for the tournament before outscoring the toughest available competition in the United States and Canada, 6-4 in three games to advance to the semifinals with a 2-0-1 record.
Ottawa disarmed the Northern Virginia Majestics, 2-0 in the semifinal before falling 2-1 to their New England counterparts, 2-1 in the ultimate match. The championship was the third time the two teams played during the 2008 season. The Fury won the first match 3-2 and tied 0-0 in the second. The third was the final, bringing the rivals full circle with a 1-1-1 record in three matches.
