Freedom Impacting Collegiate Seasons

BOYDS, MD – The Washington Freedom, having finished yet another successful season at three levels in the USL system, the Super Y-League, Super-20 and W-League, has seen several of their collegiate eligible players make an impact with their various teams. After watching players filter back to their universities, W-League and Super-20 Freedom players are standing out.

Soccer America named Freedom W-League player Becky Edwards, a senior at Florida State, to their preseason All-American list. Edwards, who played in the midfield for the Freedom, was a permanent fixture in the starting lineup after recovering from an illness that saw her head home at the start of the W-League season. Edwards started the season for Florida State by scoring her first career hat-trick against Jacksonville and being named to Soccer America’s Team of the Week on Tuesday, August 25th.

Toni Pressley was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week on Tuesday, September 22nd after scoring the game-winner against state rival Florida while also anchoring a defense that only allowed three shots. The Florida native was also a force in the defensive line for the Freedom’s W-League team. She spent much of the summer at US U20 National Team camps eventually making a trip to the Region I tournament with U19 finalist Freestate Shooters.

The Freedom saw U20 standout Tiffany Brown, a junior at Colorado College, also named to the Soccer America Team of the Week on Tuesday, September 1st. Brown scored the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over ranked Washington State and had assists in all three goals in a 3-2 win over Drake. Brown has been named to the USL Super-20 League All-Tournament team for the last three years while playing for the Freedom.

The U18 McLean Freedom striker scored a goal and had three assists in a 5-0 win over Liberty. She then added two goals and an assist in a 7-0 win over Hofstra. Miller was named the ACC Co-Player of the Week, the Top Drawer Soccer National Player of the Week and was also named to the Soccer America Team of the Week on September 1st.

The Washington Freedom W-League team went 12-1-1 in the regular season, won the Eastern Conference and lost in the W-League Final to Pali Blues. It was the Freedom’s second final in three years.

The Freedom Super-20’s won the Mid Atlantic Division after posting a 9-0-1 regular season and went onto compete in the North American Finals, held in Rockford, Illinois. The U18 McLean Freedom competed this summer at the USYSA Region I Tournament losing in the Semifinals. The McLean Freedom was the 2007 U16 USYSA National Champions.
