INDIANAPOLIS, IN - After two great seasons with FC Indiana, Spanish International striker Laura Del Rio has signed a contract with three time UEFA Cup winners FFC Frankfurt in Germany.
Del Rio, 27, is one of the most talented strikers in the world. She began her career with Spanish club Levante, making her debut at the age of 17. She has made 30 appearances for the Spanish Women’s National Team scoring 12 goals, has won three league titles and six cup titles in her career. She has scored 156 goals in all competitions in nine seasons.
This season, Del Rio was the W-League’s and FC Indiana’s top scorer with 15 goals and four assists. She was named to the All-Central Conference Team with teammates Shannon Lynn and Fatima Leyva, but was the only FC Indiana player named to the All-League Team.
At Frankfurt, FFC coach Günter Wegmann will couple Del Rio with German National Team forward Birgit Prinz.
“After seeing her play, I can only say that Laura ideally completes our squad,” said Wegmann. “She is dangerous in the box and possesses the ability run at opponents.”
“Laura will be sorely missed by FC Indiana,” said FC Indiana coach Shek Borkowski. “When it came to the last 20 minutes, when teams had been chasing the ball all day, they would understandably run out of steam and Del Rio would just destroy them. She is fantastic at it because she seems to get stronger. Players come and go, but Del Rio is a massive, massive loss for us.”
