USL News Release
Wednesday, July 01, 2009
TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced today the W-League Team of the Week honoring Cary forward Mollie Pathman as Player of the Week for her two goal, two assist performance in the Clarets 5-3 win over the Hampton Roads Piranhas.
Young for even a Super-20 League player, Pathman became the third player to be awarded the Super-20 League MVP trophy (US U20 National Team’s Ingrid Wells and W-League Washington Freedom goalkeeper Chante Sandiford) following Triangle FC’s victory in the 2008 North American Finals, last August. Then 16, Pathman netted a game-winning goal in a 1-0 semifinal victory over the Washington Freedom to send Triangle FC to the North American Finals. A day later Pathman was one of four Triangle players to convert a penalty kick as her team outlasted three-time tournament finalists, Parsippany SC, 4-2.
“Mollie is only 16,” said Triangle FC Head Coach Pete Sadin following the 2008 Super-20 Championship. “She is crafty with the ball and has a nose for goal. She really put us on her back and carried us into this final by scoring that goal yesterday.”
Fast forward to Friday, May 15, 2009 when Pathman made her USL W-League debut in Cary’s first-ever match, a 3-1 win over the Charlotte Eagles. A week later on Friday, May 22, Pathman netted her first two goals of the season in a 3-3 draw with the Richmond Kickers Destiny. Her two goal performance earned her W-League Team of the Week honors.
Pathman’s third W-League appearance came as a defender in a 2-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Hellenic on Saturday, June 13. That was the only match the Clarets (4-4-1) have lost with Pathman in the lineup (2-1-1).
This past week, Pathman opened the scoring between Hampton Roads and Cary with her seventh minute goal. Teammate Sarah Jackyra was assisted by Bianca D’Agostino in the 33rd minute to put the Clarets up 2-0, but the Piranhas battled back to draw level with goals by Mercy Akide Udoh (38th) and Jamie Clarke (56th). Pathman scored her second goal in the 71st minute to put Cary up 3-2 before handing out two assists: one to Casey Nogueira in the 83rd minute and her second, to Jackyra in the 85th.
Pathman turned 17, today.
