USL Press Release
Wednesday, June 24
TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced today the W-League Team of the Week for the ninth week of play honoring Toronto Lynx defender Clare Rustad as Player of the Week. Rustad anchored a defense that held the Buffalo Flash offense to one goal. Joining the attack from her defensive position, Rustad also netted the go-ahead goal in the 71st minute.
In a match that carried important playoff ramifications, Buffalo’s Rosie Tantillo knotted the game 1-1 with a stoppage time goal to keep the Flash a single point ahead of the Lynx in the Great Lakes Division standings.
“Clare was a team leader,” said Toronto Lynx Director of Operations, Rob Irwin. “She had a goal and a [strong] presence on defense.”
The match was the second of the week for Buffalo, who downed Laval, 2-0 just 24 hours before their showdown with Toronto. Throughout the weekend, the Flash were supported by the play of two defenders in particular – defender Alex Sahlen, who played 90 minutes in back-to-back matches and Kat Tarr, who accomplished the same feat and scored a goal and an assist in the Flash’s 2-0 win against Laval.
Outside the Great Lakes Division, midfielder Kylie Hopper had a big impact on the 8-0-0 Silverbacks remaining unbeaten. Entering a scoreless match against the Northern Virginia Majestics’ in the 59th minute, Hopper assisted on a Jenny Meyer goal in the 87th minute and converted a stoppage-time penalty kick goal to make it 2-0.
In Washington, the Freedom leveled the New York Magic and New Jersey Wildcats by a combined score of 12-0 last week. Midfielder Jenn Parsons had three goals and four assists in those matches.
In the Western Conference, Vancouver Whitecaps defender/forward Kate Qually had a goal and an assist in a 1-1-0 week for Vancouver. Her goal was the game-winner in a 3-1 victory over the Ventura County Fusion.
The Fusion got three good matches out of midfielder Randi Johns last week. She scored the game-winning goal in the 35th minute of Ventura’s 1-0 win over Real Colorado on Monday, the game-tying goal in the Fusion’s 1-1 draw with the Colorado Force on Wednesday and netted the Fusion’s only goal in their 3-1 loss to Vancouver on Saturday.
