LOS ANGELES, CA - The Los Angeles Legends W-League team snagged their first win, in the final 15 minutes of league play, edging the Ventura County Fusion 2-1. The home match was played at Citrus College Stadium.

After an early goal in the 12th minute, the Fusion held onto a 1-0 lead until the 78th minute when the Legends’, Theresa Broad threaded her way through the defense and evened the score. Broad, who had been injured for the majority of the season, came off the bench to start the second half, in only her third match of the season.

With the score tied 1-1, both teams fought for the remaining league points available. When a Fusion player was shown the yellow card inside the penalty box, the Legends quickly placed the ball, and sent a crisp pass to USC player Lauren Brown, who turned and scored with just three minutes remaining. Brown also scored the lone goal in the previous match, a 3-1 loss to the Pali Blues on Friday, July 18th.

The 2-1 win was a season highlight for the LA Legends in their inaugural season as a full W-league team. After fielding a provisional team, which competed in just three matches in 2007, the Legends began this season with a new coach and a streak of six away games. The Legends did manage several ties including a 0-0 match against the Seattle Sounders and a 1-1 tie against the Fort Collins Force.

The LA Legends Men’s team was on hand to witness the win as they were warming up for their match also against the Ventura County Fusion. The men succumbed to a 1-2 loss, dropping their league record to 6-6-4.
