CARY, NC – Hot off their 2-0 victory over the Carolina Dynamo last Saturday night, the Carolina RailHawks Women prepare for their home opener on Friday, May 16th at 7:30 PM at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, by scrimmaging against the US Armed Forces Women’s Soccer Team on Tuesday, May 13th at 8:00 PM at WRAL Soccer Center, 7700 Perry Creek Rd in Raleigh. The event is free and open to the public and fans are encouraged to come and meet the 2008 Inaugural Carolina RailHawks women’s team.
“Building on our first important win of the season, Tuesday night will allow us to work on our match cohesion,” said RailHawks Head Coach Jay Howell. “I think the ladies played well in Greensboro against the Dynamo but, because of the short preseason, they are not used to playing together as a team and this match will give us another opportunity to work together, get to know each other more and build for the future.”
The US Armed Forces Women’s team is stationed at Pope Air Force Base while preparing for the Military World Cup in the Netherlands at the end of May and is looking to play some competitive soccer before heading over to Europe.
The RailHawks will be without forward Casey Nogueira who will be spending the next two weeks with the United States U-20 National Team but head coach Jay Howell will be able to rely on UGA standout forward Carrie Patterson as well as defenders Betsy Frederick and Thori Bryan, who scored the franchise’s first ever goal against the Carolina Dynamo last Saturday night.
“It was unexpected,” Thori Bryan said about her header against the Dynamo. “We hadn’t practiced those plays yet as we have only been together a couple of weeks. It was a great service and a great feeling to score so early in the game. I was telling Nogueira that she needed to score early so we could get a good game going but she ended up serving me a great ball to score with.”
The Carolina RailHawks Women will make their WakeMed Soccer Park debut the following Friday, May 16th at 7:30 PM against the Atlanta Silverbacks and the Carolina RailHawks USL-1 Men’s team will host the Minnesota Thunder on Sunday, May 18th at 6:00 PM at WakeMed Soccer Park.
