TAMPA, FL – The Tampa Bay Hellenic took the field for the first time as members of the USL W-League this afternoon, losing a hard-fought match to the Bradenton Athletics, 1-0.

The Hellenic had many chances in the first half, unleashing 17 shots and forcing Athletics’ goalkeeper Shannon Aitken to make nine saves. Despite the offensive onslaught, the half would end in a nil-nil stalemate.

At halftime the Hellenic honored all the mothers in attendance, giving each a flower and a ticket to the Hellenics next contest.

The second half saw a more balanced affair, as both teams had dangerous chances. The Athletics’ goal came against the run of play in the 62nd minute when Erika Tymrak slotted the ball to Jess Bartol who took advantage of the Hellenic’s Katlynn Fraine coming off her line, and calmly chipped the ball over the on-rushing Fraine.

The Hellenic will be back in action on Saturday, May 17, when they take on the Hampton Roads Piranhas in Virginia Beach, VA, before traveling to take on the West Virginia Illusion the next night. Tampa Bay’s next home game is Saturday, May 31, at 8 p.m. against the Richmond Kickers Destiny at the Ed Radice Sports Complex.
