WALTHAM, MA -- Rebounding was the order of the day for the Boston Renegades as they ran riot over the New Hampshire Lady Phantoms 8-1 to erase last week's loss.
Denise Thomas grabbed a hat-trick, while Marisa Brown (2), Kara Kabellis, Stacy Stocco and Meghan Welcome scored in the game that had seen the Phantoms take an early lead.
The Boston Renegades put last week’s agonizing defeat against Ottawa behind them with a stunning performance against the Phantoms.
The Renegades thought that it was not going to be their night when Meotis Erikson scored to put the visitors ahead after only 11 minutes.
The Renegades finally got what they deserved in the 32nd minute, when Marisa Brown chased a Phantoms defender into the corner. Brown won the ball and passed it to Irish international Denise Thomas, who curled a beautiful shot over the keeper into the left side of the goal to resume parity.
In the 35th minute the Renegades got the go-ahead goal. Jenny Anderson hit a corner from the right and in the ensuing melee, Kara Kabellis bundled the ball over the line.
The Renegades were not finished there as Lisa Stoia and Sarah Rahko orchestrated another goal. Stoia found Rahko who returned the compliment to her teammate. Stoia got to the goalline and whipped in a cross that Thomas acrobatically finished.
In the 56th minute Marisa Brown’s industry created the Renegades fourth goal for the hat-trick hero, Denise Thomas. Brown chased the ball into the right hand corner and unselfishly squared the ball back to the Irish international at the edge of the 18 yard box. The ball flew past the hapless keeper into the top right corner.
Brown was at it again in the 63rd minute crossing for Meghan Welcome, who registered her first of the season.
Marisa Brown got in on the act creating a goal for herself. She dispossessed an opposing defender and slotted the ball past the keeper in the 73rd.
Stacy Stocco returned from injury to score what was undoubtedly the goal of the game. After good work yet again from the industrious Brown, Stocco received the ball 25 yards out and curled the ball beautifully past two defenders and the goalkeeper into the bottom corner of the goal in the 84th.
Brown was again to be rewarded for her hard work grabbing the eighth goal in the final five minutes, assisted by Stocco in the 86th.
Head Coach Luis Reis stated, “We got caught out like last week very early on tonight. Yet, this time we were able to come back and make a statement to everyone that was here tonight and everyone in the league that we haven’t gone away.”
On Brown and Thomas, the coach was very pleased with their performance. “Both players were excellent this evening. With only one recognized striker (Welcome), I had to bring Marisa and Denise to offense. I am very happy that they played well this evening and created a number of problems with their movement off the ball,” stated the Renegades boss.
